Ljubljana castle (Slovenian Ljubljanski grad) is a medieval castle above Ljubljana, located on the castle hill (Slovenian Grajski grič, pron. "Graiskee greech"). Archeological research has shown, that the castle hill above Ljubljana was continuously inhabited for over 3000 years. The castle was first time documented in 1144. In 16th and 17th century the castle was enlarged and new parts were added. In 1905 the municipality of Ljubljana bought the castle and it owns it ever since. In the 1990s the castle experienced a revival in popularity. After long and extensive renovation works (for 35 years), it was opened to public and became a popular spot for locals and tourists.
When you want to go to Ljubljana castle, you have 3 choices. One is by car, one is by foot and one by a recently built funicular, which is probably the most convenient for you. You have to go to Krekov trg, which is near the St. Nicholas cathedral and the day market (tržnica). We paid 3eur per person for two ways. My girlfriend made a video of the ride and if you're lucky, you even may spot me in the clip ;-)
Enjoy some of my photos of the Ljubljana castle:
Unless you go to a café on top or to some exhibitions in the castle, you won't be on top over 30min. The castle is small, but lovely. There are no masses of people, so it's possible to take some decent photos. If you come to Ljubljana, you definitely need to visit the castle.
